Maria Sharapova of Russia completely dominated play against her Czech opponent Iveta Benesova, winning 6-1 6-2 while fourth seed Jelena Jankovic found a resurgent Mirjana Lucic of Croatia a rather more troublesome prospect, coming through in three tight sets 6-4 3-6 6-2.
Benesova did not cope well with Sharapova's consistent power and strong serves, enabling Maria to go for her shots and confidently go through to the third round.
Sharapova will next face qualifier Beatrice Capra after the 18-year-old American enjoyed a rather unexpected 7-5 2-6 6-3 victory against 18th seed Aravane Rezai.
Mirjana Lucic was leading 3-2 with a break in the third set but fourth seed Jankovic found her accuracy just in time to reel off the last four games and with it the match.
"I'm just happy to get through - she gave me a really hard time," said Jankovic. "It's a step forward from the first round. I think I played much better but I have to pick it up. I'm working on it."
