In what was billed as a "glamour battle" the 20-year-old Dane Wozniacki withstood the power that Sharapova unleashed and emerged victorious in just under two hours 6-3 6-4.
It was a compelling match with Sharapova seemingly on the cusp of recapturing her best form but just falling short at crucial moments in the game. Wozniacki on the other hand was consistent throughout and with her customary defensive play, capitalised on every short ball and had the Russian former world number one on the run for much of the match.
Maria experimented and managed to mix up her play a little and when she did throw in a drop shot or come in for the odd volley was generally successful.
In the end it was Wozniacki's consistency and solid defence that won the match and the Dane will now go on to face Dominika Cibulkova in the quarterfinals after the Slovakian's impressive victory over another former champion here - Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-5 7-6.
Also through to the quarterfinals is Kaia Kanepi of Estonia who overcame last year's semi-finalist Yanina Wickmayer of Belguim 0-6 7-6 6-1. She is joined by Russia's Vera Zvonareva who comprehensively defeated Germany's Andrea Petkovic 6-1 6-2.
