In just short of two hours Federer gained revenge over Soderling who beat him in this year's French Open.
Billie Jean King described the wind which had hindered play throughout the day as the worst to ever hit the tournament.
After an impressive performance Federer was obviously pleased to come through in such difficult conditions: “This was a big victory for me but I didn't need revenge to motivate me. The wind was blowing so hard and it was really tough conditions. You do feel the wind is blowing through your ears and your eyes but I got used to it.
“Robin had more problems with the serve and it was the key in this match. Whatever you throw at me I can deal with, although I would freak out if it was snow.”
Having failed to repeat his quarter-final victory at Roland Garros, Soderling paid tribute to Federer. The fifth-seeded Swede said: “It was not easy out there but I couldn't change the weather. He played really well at the end and it came down to small margins and the wind meant I didn't put in as many first serves. He moves well and is always in the right place so can play in the wind.”
Federer now goes on to face Novak Djokovic after the Serbian had earlier defeated a below-par Gael Monfils of France 7-6 6-1 6-2.
