Clijsters at US Open 2009
Defending champion Kim Clijsters and two-time champion Venus Williams advanced to the second round of the US Open 2010, both in straight sets.
Belgian Clijsters had a slump in the second set but rallied just in time to come through 6-0 7-5 over Greta Arn of Hungary.
Venus comfortably beat Roberta Vinci of Italy 6-4 6-1 in the night session.
Joining Kim and Venus in round two are Victoria Azerenka, Elena Dementieva and Francesca Schiavone. Schiavone defeated Morita of Japan 6-0 6-1, Dementieva defeated Govortsova 6-1 6-2 but Azarenka needed a third set to beat Monica Niculescu 6-0 5-7 6-1.
Daniela Hantuchova also advanced at the expense of last years top seed, Dinara Safina or Russia who is still struggling to recapture her form this year.
