Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro is through to the second round of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami after defeating Ricardo Mello of Brazil 6-4, 6-4.

After playing only three events last year due to a right wrist injury, Del Potro has been showing impressive form in recent weeks as he continues to make his way back to the top of the game, rising from 257th in the rankings to 51st since the beginning of this year.

“I’m still improving match by match,” said del Potro. “It’s a good signal for my future, for my comeback, and for recovering my game.”

2008 champion here, Russian Nikolay Davydenko was unable to stop a recent slump in form that has seen him slip to 42 in the rankings, losing to Kevin Anderson of South Africa in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
