Former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero advanced to the third round after defeating Xavier Malisse in straight sets 6-4 6-2.

The 31-year-old Spaniard was playing his first match since the 2010 U.S. Open after recovering from wrist and knee surgery last October.

Seventh seed Gael Monfils of France is also through after battling past Robin Haase in three sets 3-6 7-6 (7-3) 6-2.

Richard Gasquet also won through in three sets, defeating Juan Ignacio Chela 2-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-4.

Other winners included Nikolay Davydenko, Carlos Berlocq and Kei Nishikori.

In other news on Tuesday Andy Murray was forced to withdraw due to an elbow injury and Tomas Berdych also pulled out due to a stomach virus.
