Nadal through, Soderling out in ATP Barcelona
Rafael Nadal began his quest for a sixth ATP Barcelona Open title with a smooth 6-1 6-1 on Wednesday.
The world number one crushed his compatriot Daniel Gimeno-Traver with his trademark punishing groundstroke’s in just over an hour.
Nadal will now face Santiago Giraldo in the third round.
“(Giraldo) is very aggressive and one of the most dangerous players on the circuit,” said Nadal, who has beaten his upcoming opponent in straight sets in their previous two meetings.
“The match against (Giraldo) last year was hard. Tomorrow I have to play solid and be as aggressive as I can.”
Sweden's Robin Soderling disappointing run continued with a loss to Ivan Dodig of Croatia. The world number five was soundly beaten in straight sets 6-2 6-4.
Former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero continued his return from injury after he defeated lucky loser Mischa Zverev who replaced the injured Andy Murray, 6-4 7-5.
