Andy Roddick stunned by qualifier Flavio Cipolla
12th seed Andy Roddick is out of the ATP Mutua Madrid Open after losing to qualifier Flavio Cipolla of Italy in three sets.
American Roddick seemed out of sorts against the relatively unknown Italian on Monday night. Although he saved a match point in the second set tiebreak to take the match to a deciding set Roddick was unable to hit through the Italian and could not prevent Cipolla from winning in just over three hours 6-4 6-7 (7-9) 6-3.
Cipolla is joined in the second round by John Isner who won an all-American encounter against Mardy Fish 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 7-6 (7-3) in two hours and 54 minutes.
Other winners on Monday include Gael Monfils who defeated Croatian giant Ivo Karlovic 6-3 7-6 (7-6) and Michael Llodra who defeated Sam Querrey 6-2 6-3.
Xavier Malisse and Marin Cilic are also through to the second round.
