WTA Rome tennis Monday round-up
Svetlana Kuznetsova falls in the first round while Marion Bartoli and Ana Ivanovic progress in the WTA Internazionali BNL d'Italia on Monday.
Former French and US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova fell at the first hurdle in Rome on Monday when she was defeated in a tough three-set battle with veteran Greta Arn of Hungary. Arn won 3-6 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (11-9) after a three hour 22 minute tussle.
Another former French Open champion fared better on Monday when Ana Ivanovic of Serbia went through to the second round after her opponent Nadia Petrova was forced to retire. Ivanovic was leading 6-0 3-0 when Petrova ended the contest.
Ninth-seed Marion Bartoli of France also progressed after defeating last year's surprise winner here in Rome, Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain. Bartoli won in three sets 6-0 5-7 6-4.
Other first round winners on Monday included Yanina Wickmayer, Daniela Hantuchova and Elena Vesnina.
