Djokovic and Federer advance to second round
Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer are both safely through to the second round of the French Open after both scored straight set victories.
Second seed Djokovic was in impressive form against Dutchman Thiemo de Bakker and needed just over one hour and a half to advance 6-2 6-1 6-3. De Bakker had no answer to 24-year-old Djokovic's power and precision and looked out of his depth against the world number two.
"It was a great first match for me in Roland Garros," said Djokovic after the match. "I was serving really, really well and being very aggressive, using every opportunity to step into the court. I was quite in control of the match."
Roger Federer followed Djokovic on Philippe Chatrier court and many were expecting a tough match for the former world number one but the third seed put in a dominant performance to see off the challenge of Feliciano Lopez in straight sets 6-3 6-4 7-6 (7-3).
Last year's semi-finalist Tomas Berdych will not be joining Federer and Djokovic in the second round after the sixth seed slumped to a shock defeat at the hands of French qualifier Stephane Robert.
31-year-old Robert won in three hours and 23 minutes 3-6 3-6 6-2 6-2 9-7.
"I gave it all today," said Robert after the match, "I fought for my life.
"In the third set, he started to give me some points. Winning that set gave me confidence and I became more aggressive on the return."
Other first round winners on Monday included 13th seed Richard Gasquet of France, 25th seed Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina and 28th seed Nikolay Davydenko of Russia.
