Clijsters, Sharapova through to second round in Paris
Kim Clijsters and Maria Sharapova both secured straight-set wins to advance to the second round of the French Open.
World number two Kim Clijsters was playing her first match since returning from a foot injury that has caused her to miss the last two months of play, and at times during her 6-2 6-3 victory over Anastasiya Yakimova her lack of match-play was evident.
The Belgian by her own admission was not as sharp as she would have liked, but her powerful forehand and superior movement saw her through to the second round.
"I felt that I was moving aggressively but didn't always go to the lines as much as I would like to," said Clijsters after the match.
"I was trying, but I was kind of just not on target as much as I would like to be."
Recent Rome champion Maria Sharapova was in impressive form against Croatian Mirjana Lucic and needed just 56 minutes to storm through and reach the second round.
The Russian swept aside Lucic with some powerful and aggressive play to win in straight-sets 6-3 6-0.
Other seeds who advanced on Tuesday include 6th seed Li Na, 4th seed Victoria Azarenka, 21st seed Yanina Wickmayer and 15th seed Andrea Petkovic.
Former French Open champion Ana Ivanovic will not be making an appearance in the second round after she was defeated by Sweden's Johanna Larsson in three sets. Larsson won 7-6 (7-3) 0-6 6-2, leaving Ivanovic in tears after she revealed she was hindered by a wrist injury.
"It is very frustrating." said Ivanovic after the match. "It's inflammation of the wrist but I didn't suffer it playing, I woke up with the problem. The bone has slipped and has caused friction. I'm very upset".
