Defending Wimbledon champion Serena Williams has announced she will return to the tour after her recent foot injury and health scares.

The former world number one will play her first event after nearly a year out of action at next week's Aegon International in Eastbourne.

Serena's participation at the event will boost the already strong field that has eight out of the top 13 women competing, including recent French Open champion Li Na of China. Serena is due to arrive by the weekend at the south coast event, along with sister Venus who is also coming back from injury.

Venus, who turns 31 this month, has not played since pulling out of the Australian Open earlier this year.

"I am so excited to be healthy enough to compete again," said Serena. "These past 12 months have been extremely tough and character-building. I have so much to be grateful for. I'm thankful to my family, friends and fans for all of their support … Serena's back."
