Wimbledon 2011: Federer and Djokovic safely into round two
Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are both safely through to round two at Wimbledon after both secured comfortable victories on Tuesday.
Third-seed Federer was not in top form during the first set of his Centre court encounter with Kazakhstan player Mikhail Kukushkin and was forced to secure the first set with a tie-break which he took by 7 points to 2.
From then on, although the Swiss never seemed to kick into top gear his game was more than enough to comfortably see off the Kukushkin challenge.
Federer won in one hour and 42 minutes 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 6-2.
"He served very well, played a good match and made it competitive but I was really happy with my performance." said Federer after the match. "
I never really struggled on my serve and I was able to cruise through a lot of my service games."
Second-seed Djokovic had a more straight-forward match with Jeremy Chardy of France, dropping only six games on his way to the second round, 6-4 6-1 6-1.
This was the first competitive match the Serbian had played since his loss to Roger Federer in the semi-finals of the French Open at the start of June.
"When my streak ended in Paris, it was kind of a relief as well, because it was a successful five, six months for me, but also very long and exhausting. I've played so many matches," said Djokovic.
"So I needed some time to relax and I'm happy to see that I'm playing well and that I'm mentally really fresh to have more success."
