"WTA Tweets, Facebook Posts & other News Snippets.." 18 Apr 2011 20:08 #6487

As CC already has that nice little section of Twitter things going on - I thought that it would be handy to have a thread of any tweets, facebook postings and any other snippets of news of that ilk, relating to WTA players!

So please do post any interesting bits of news here

Whilst on the 21st century-style subject - does anyone here have smart phones - whether iphones, androids or suchlike?

If so, then there is a fab WTA/ ATP app, that is well worth downloading if you can. It is called 'ATP/ WTA Live' and is ideal for following the scores for any WTA (or ATP) tournament.

Details here:

As an opening salvo, is anyone following any WTA players in particular?

Only following Petkovic so far - again, very entertaining! The girl likes to party. that's for sure..

I follow loads of players. I think my favourites tweeters are;

Alina Jidkova
twitter.com/AlinaJidkova

Sofia Arvidsson
twitter.com/Sofia_Arvidsson

Lisa Raymond
twitter.com/lisaraymond73

Plus the British girls are worth following too. Katie O'Brien, Laura Robson and Anne Keothavong post some funny stuff!

It's interesting very few of the ATP players have twitter accounts.

Least favourite tweeters are Wozniacki, Azarenka and Peer.

Good stuff nevets!

Just digging around on twitter right now. Elena Vesnina looks like a lot of fun! She seems to get on with Sania Mirza like a house on fire too.

Here is one of Lena's tweets;

I'd agree that's a great app to have for any tennis fan

It works really well and has all the ATP and WTA tournaments covered, it even has scoring for ATP challenger events and I like the way the stats are available during the match...

The joys of the player hotel in Fes...

Anastasia Pivovarova
That was a really scary night! When at 1am two men entered my room while I was sleeping!!!Scared the hell out of me!!

After calling reception found out that a drunk man lost his key and tried to get into"his"room!

The worst thing is there is no lock on the door,so I have no clue how Im gonna sleep next night being alone in the room. Scary!!!

Serena's tweets are extremely bizarre 90% of the time, have absolutely no idea what she is talking about...

Yeah, Venus and Serena both tweet completely differently. A reflection of their very different personalities. Venus's are largely boring, but then I think she is quite a private person. Whereas Serena frankly tells you too much most of the time.

I've never really seen the point of twitter, why would anyone feel the need to update people on their daily movements? If you are trying to sell a brand or product or whatever it makes sense, but I'm sure 99% of tweets in the world are really boring!

Re: "WTA Tweets, Facebook Posts & other News Snippets.." 19 Apr 2011 19:32 #6619

Indeed! Much of it is dull.

Recently someone was extolling the virtues of a website where people were encouraged to take and post a photograph a day - some sort of photographic diary.

I have neither the time nor inclination to view daily photos of people I don't even know. Means that there is yet more unnecessary dross on the internet.

So.. with the Twitter/ Facebook thing, just trying to focus on the 1% that are interesting/ entertaining..

The most interesting thing about twitter is the increasing role it is playing as one of the most valuable areas of open source intelligence. It is proving increasingly useful to security services around the world (the most notable example being during the Mumbai terrorist attacks in India) It has also become very important in humanitarian disasters in providing up to date information about the situation in various affected areas and the locations of survivors. (the Haitian and Chilean earthquakes last year being particularly notable examples).

Anyway, slightly off-topic...

Well, I did not know any of that - many thanks for that!

And really interesting that the whole thing of course never started out with that as an objective..

Maybe these twitter threads should be renamed 'Open Source WTA/ ATP Tennis Intelligence' Threads?!

Indeed, a great many things end up being used in ways their creators could never have imagined.

Technically it should be 'Open Source WTA / ATP Tennis Information' Threads - lol- it only becomes intelligence when it has been processed by an intelligence gathering agency - in its raw form it is just information. (a bit geeky, but I have done some research work in this field, and they are very keen on labelling things correctly! To the point of pedantry sometimes!)
