Good luck today Sharapova and Jelena. Especially the Dokic as she's got a tall order in the ghastly Bartoli

and I'm sure we all expect Serena to continue to play herself into the tournament...

I'm gonna call an upset in the Zvonareva vs. Hradecka match. Vera isn't playing very well and Lucie can be a dangerous opponent.

Muted applause as Bartoli takes the first set from Dokic.

Actually I think it was mostly from her family

Vera wins in straight sets

Unconvincing win for Kvitova

Easy wins for Sourena and Shoulder...

Quite a few seeds out, including Kanepi who lost to GS-specialist Makarova. Vinci (to Zheng), Petrova (to Errani) and Pavlyuchenkova (to King) also out but these aren't really surprises.

. And serena did. The draw is opening up nicely for her.

That was also Serena's 500th career win.

Which, interestingly, still only puts her fourth amongst active players and outside the top 15 all time. (according to wikipedia)

Surprised to see Kanepi and Pavly out so early.

Kvitova able to win whilst playing ugly today, it will be interesting to see whether that gives her strength and confidence going forward (a la Serena) or if she folds in the next couple of rounds (a la most of the WTA).

my preictions contests are all already dead in the water so i can now concentrate on my favourites rather than who might win me a point or two!! Azarenka and Kvitova are starting to revive my interest in the WTA (especially Vika!) but Serena is still my favourite active woman. Like to see Li Na to do well as she is such a great personality but i never have faith in her to win a match. Can give or take Kim really, i kind of hope she retires (again).
Only interested in seeing Azarenka getting to the final in the top half, my guilty pleasure would be to see Bartoli come through the bottom to play her, but would like to see the winner of Serena and Maria beat Kvitova, then lose to Vika in the final.

I've learned not to get too excited about Nadia P, but she's so cute...
