The new (or not) post Australian Open WTA No.1 17 Jan 2012 15:26 #19939

Current rank Player Current Ranking Points Dropping Points Adding Points New Total Next Opponent
2 Kvitova 7290 500 100 6890 Suarez Navarro (R2)
1 Wozniacki 7485 900 100 6685 Tatishvilli (R2)
3 Azarenka 6865 280 100 6685 Dellacqua (R2)
4 Sharapova 6440 280 100 6260 Hampton (R2)
5 Stosur 5585 160 5 5430
8 Radwanska 5330 500 100 4930 Rogowska (R2)

Ranking points: R1: 5, R2: 100, R3: 160, R4: 280, QF: 500, SF: 900, F: 1400, W: 2000

I was surprised to learn that at the start of this Australian Open, 6 players could finish it ranked at No.1

On the old 606 boards one poster used to do a 'Points Spy' calculation to determine changes in the projected post-event rankings for slams and Masters Events. I have taken a leaf out of his book and done this for these 6 players so I can keep an eye on the no.1 ranking as the tournament develops, hence the table above

I plan to update this if anyone finds it useful - also let me know if I have made any obvious errors. Stosur has already dropped out of this race following her loss earlier today. Kvitova is obviously in the driving seat, only having to match Wozniacki and Azarenka to take the No.1 spot Radwanska will be eliminated too if Kvitova wins her next match.

Oh and if anyone knows how I can post a spreadsheet on here please let me know as I am not tech-savvy enough to figure this out

Thanks for that, really interesting! I was amazed as well when I read that six players could become number one.

Kvitova seems the right one to take over No.1 although if one of the others won the tournament to become No.1 that would be cool too.

I expect Kvitova or Azarenka to top the rankings at the end of this fortnight. Sorry Caro, but your reign at the top is about to come to an end...FINALLY

Probably on my own here, but I hope Azarenka gets it

Mojo - are you using a pc or a mac?

If you are able to get a screenshot, and save it into .png format, then that is usually the simplest way to prepare a file.

Then click 'add file' when adding a post to a thread - and click 'insert' to add the screen shot to the post (but first select where in your post you would like the screen shot to appear).

Well done mojo.

Cogen's Points Spy was one of 606's few undoubted virtues, though as I recall it was only ever ATP.

I hope it will be current slam title holder Kvitova, or failing that previous slam title winner Sharapova. Or failing that, Wozniacki keeps it by winning the title, or failing that Azarenka takes it by winning the title... I presume you see where I'm going with this

Please not Azarenka!

Re: The new (or not) post Australian Open WTA No.1 18 Jan 2012 17:50 #20057

Spot the deliberate mistake When mentioning Radwanska's potential elimination from the No.1 Race if Kvitova wins her 2nd Round match, I forgot to take into account the points she has already accumulated - so although it looks as if she can catch Kvitova if you glance at the 'New Total' column, she's already accumulated 160 points from this event and even if she wins the tournament another 1840 points is not enough to catch Kvitova. Radwanska was elimnated from the No.1 scenario after Kvitova won her first round match and it's now a four horse race. Hopefully that's as clear as mud

My reason for starting this was I found a mention on the WTA website that 6 players could become No.1 and who those players were. But it didn't mention what any of the permutations were...so at least we can now follow what is going on (as long as I get the figures right )

I think most of us on here would prefer a No.1 with a slam to her name, be it a current holder of a slam (Kvitova), a former holder of a slam (Sharapova) or the winner of this slam (any of the 4 players in with a chance). What I would want to avoid is a continuation of the scenario of slamless No.1 (either Wozniacki or Azarenka potentially )

The other thing that strikes me when looking at the draw is that Kim and Serena may have potentially have a huge say in determining who is no.1 at the end of the tourney, even though they can't get there themselves

NL - I'm using a PC and have been able to save the spreadsheet as a png file. I'm not finding the option to 'add a file' when I open up a new post - am I missing a step? If I click on the image link icon, I get the 'size' and 'URL' boxes but I'm not sure what to add here as the file is on my pc not the web. Thanks

If Sonarenka gets to no.1 she will get a much higher profile - will she inspire a whole host of mini-Sonarenkites yelping their way through tennis matches?

realistically sharapova has to win the title to stand a chance, and wozz has to better both vika and kvitova. not much chance for either in my eyes so its basically whomever gets the furthest out of the 2 and 3 seeds. if they both lose in the same round then kvitova will take it anyway so im guessing she has to be the favourite

I was going to post something about that, as the commentator for Petra's R1 match mentioned that Aga would be out of the running if Petra were to win her R1 match..

I just assumed that he was wrong and you were right!

If you post a reply using 'quick reply' then there will be no option to attach a document. I think that you have to click on the 'advanced' option from there.

If you are replying to thread using the full reply, then if - below the box where you would normally write your reply - you don't have word 'attachments', a box, then an 'add file' button - then you probably don't have authorisation to post files.

If that is the case, then trisco would need to enable access for you. it would be worth pming him to request this access.

For now - if you don't have access, then just e-mail the .png file to ccbotp@hotmail.com. I can pick it up from there and post it for you.

NL - thanks!

Looks like I don't have access - I will PM trisco as it may be useful to have in the future and it looks better if I end up doing something like this regularly. Thank you also for offering to post in the interim, but as I have it set up in this format now it takes very little tweaking for these 4 players
